Barney's Version is a novel written by Canadian author Mordecai Richlerpublished by Knopf Canada in Take a ride through Burn Out Netflix life and Freitag Der 13 Teil 10 of Barney Panofsky, a hard-drinking, cigar-smoking, Ticket Für Zwei year old hockey fanatic and television producer, as he reflects on his life's successes and numerous Smart Werte Auslesen and failures as the final chapters of Smart Werte Auslesen own existence come sharply into focus. Lewisbased on the novel of the same name by Mordecai Richler.

But in any case, I'm inclined to believe, after having read Barney's Version , that the basic claim possesses its share of the truth.

Allow me to explain myself. There's no denying that Richler is an accomplished prose stylist: in his expert hands or at the very least his sole writing hand , the various locales in which the novel's action takes place—Paris, New York, Toronto and especially Montreal—are brought vibrantly alive, as do the horrendously flawed but ultimately lovable schmucks who inhabit them.

And Wikipedia's enigmatic critics were right: my God, what striking action it is! Yet this doesn't, as they claimed, come at a cost.

Rather, as Richler guides us through a myriad of entertaining albeit essential detours think Tristran Shandy , we nonetheless inch persisently towards the final exposal of the work's central—although perhaps rather unexpected—message of love and redemption.

Both the internal consistency of Barney's Version and its realness for lack of a better term likely stem from particular parallels to Richler's own life.

Like the titular Barney Panofsky, Richler was besotted with another woman—whom he would later marry—at his own wedding reception.

And both character and author are plagued by the infirmities of old-age; indeed, Richler would die only four years after the novel's publication.

Plus, here's another point of commonality: both men are credited with authoring the work—Mr. Richler on the front cover, Mr. Panofsky on inside title page.

But the other characters also contain echoes of their creator. For instance, Richler's real-life stint in Paris as a young man did not resemble Barney and co.

The result: an extradordinarily intimate work which begins by tickling your funnybone but ends up hitting you right in the heart. But a fly has dirtied the ointment.

Perhaps it's nothing more than the first stirrings of undiagnosed OCD, but I was slighlty vexed by the ending.

But enough to perceptibly alter my attitude towards the entire novel. The problem is this: In order to finally resolve the mystery of Boogie's death, Richler invokes the urban legend of the scuba diver sucked up by the water bomber.

But such an occurrence is not merely unlikely, it's actually downright impossible. And this leaves us readers with one of two possibilities: 1 just as it would be in the real world, it's impossible that a plane could have scooped up a snorkling Boogie and subsequently dropped him to his death, in which case Barney heaven forbid!

The first possibility has some interesting consequences. For instance, it means that Barney is even more of an unreliable narrator than we had thought.

In light of this chilling revelation, can we trust anything he's told us? And, oh my god, what if Clara didn't truly commit suicide that fateful night in Paris?

What if Barney murdered her as well? But sadly, we musn't forget that water bombers were explicitely mentioned earlier in the novel—and morevover, that Barney had a mysterious plane-crash dream on the day of Boogie's disappearance; hence, it becomes clear that this interpretation—as delightfully macabre as it might be—is pretty far-fetched.

And so alas, all that remains for us is the second possibility. I fully realize, of course, that it's probably ridiculous of me to let something as silly as a confuted urban legend spoil—even marginally—a work of literature as accomplished as Barney's Version.

But then again, I think that's exactly why it bothers me so much. January — Barney Panofsky is an aging Jewish businessman from Montreal whose made the bulk of his fortune producing what he himself would define as schlock Canadian television programs.

All of which of course makes him a delightfully unreliable narrator since we also quickly learn that Barney is a heavy drinker who enjoys his Macallan single malt scotch accompanied with plenty of cigars, morning, noon and night.

The novel is divided into three parts which are ostensibly dedicated to his three former wives. It took me a good pages or so before I began to enjoy this book and very nearly dropped it before I got there because Barney jumps into a bunch of jumbled-up stories, naming places and individuals and incidents big and small and skipping through time willy-nilly in the opening section, which made it hard to figure out what the heck was going on.

But as I progressed, I began to see there was a method to the madness, and the story that does emerge is well-worth the initial confusion. Nov 23, R.

Barney is a rascal-a hard drinking, hard smoking, hard living type of guy. He spent his early years in France living with other North American ex-pats.

This is during the time that Hemingway and other Americans were living in Paris in the 's. One where Barney meets life-long friends and enemies.

Barney moves back to Canada and begins to make money with a television production company. But he remains a rascal.

We see him through three marriages and three marital tragedies. The tale jumps back and forth as Barney's mind does, but it it still easy to follow his tumultuous life.

After playing New York so many times, it's nice to see Montreal get to play itself, and the city's richly unique milieu, along with that of Rome and New York, has been lavishly captured by Guy Dufaux's vibrant cinematography and Claude Pare's warm, earthy production design.

As an added bonus, smaller roles are filled by a who's who of the Canadian film industry, including cameos by David Cronenberg, Denys Arcand, Atom Egoyan and Ted Kotcheff.

It's a premise that could've and should've been used as a springboard for a brisk character-based comedy, and it does seem, in the outset, that that's exactly what filmmaker Richard J.

Lewis has accomplished. Giamatti delivers as engrossing and compelling performance as one might have expected, while the impressive supporting cast effectively injects bursts of color and energy into the proceedings.

Dustin Hoffman's scene-stealing turn as Barney's brutally frank father stands as an obvious highlight.

The movie's momentum takes a serious hit following the arrival of Minnie Driver's over-the-top character, however, as the actress, cast as Barney's caricature of a second wife, delivers a seriously grating performance that ultimately triggers the film's downfall - with the subsequent emphasis on sequences of a decidedly overlong and downright needless nature exacerbating the progressively less-than-engrossing atmosphere.

Scripter Michael Konyves' reliance on laughably inauthentic chunks of dialogue certainly doesn't help matters eg "you really do wear your heart on your sleeve; now put it away, it's disgusting to look at" , and there inevitably reaches a point at which the relentlessly lighthearted vibe becomes impossible to stomach ie one can't help but crave some substance and depth.

This is a great movie, with very strong and great performances from Paul Giamatii and also from Rosamund Pike. This is a love story, yes, and it is not a member of the Twilight Saga, but the latter is probably why it is so good.

It seems real and true. We see the adult life of the protagonist and we are with him and against him at the same time. This dramedy will most likely not win over Twihards, but it is, nevertheless, a funny, sad and great picture I'm glad I didn't miss.

Toward the end of his life, Barney Panofsky Paul Giamatti looks back on his triumphs and tragedies, beginning with an ill-fated relationship with Clara Rachelle Lefevre , whom he marries when she becomes pregnant.

When that falls apart, he moves back home to Montreal and gets married twice more, finally finding contentment with Miriam Rosamund Pike , his third wife.

Through it all, Barney is sustained by his work in television, raising children and the advice of his father Dustin Hoffman. Richard J. Robert Lantos.

There are some funny moments, but Paul Giamatti and Dustin Hoffman wring a dramatic tale out of the lunacy. The key is the honesty of Giamatti's portrayal.
